How Heathy is Capisic Brook?

If you were out walking along the Capisic Brook Trail last week, you may have seen students from Deering High School wading in the water with nets. Katie Flavin’s science classes were studying the water quality of Capisic Brook with Ali from the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District. They were searching for macroinvertebrates living on the bottom of the stream. They also measured the amount of oxygen, phosphorous, nitrogen, and pH of the water.

They found dragonfly larvae, crane fly larvae, and even salamanders!

This activity is funded by the City of Portland through the Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program and led by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
