The Trout Have a New Home
Back in January, the students at Lyman Moore Middle School received bottles that contained over 300 brook trout eggs. For the past 4 months they have been raising those eggs until they developed into fry. Last week Margaret Paisley and Hazel Cashman took their 7th grade classes to the Presumpscot River Preserve where they met Chris and Amren from the District and Kirsten from the Portland Water District to release the brook trout. Before releasing the trout, the young scientists assessed the quality of the river by measuring the chemical properties of the water and observing macroinvertebrates that were found living in the stream. It was a great day!
We also want to thank the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership for funding some of the trout raising unit equipment used by Lyman Moore Middle School.
