Stormwater Solutions: Rain Barrels
There are three ways to help keep our waters healthy and safe. One, capture the stormwater before it has a chance to encounter pollutants; two, allow the stormwater to infiltrate into the ground quickly before it has a chance to encounter pollutants; and three, prevent pollutants from coming in contact with stormwater.
Rain barrels help with the first option of capturing stormwater runoff before it encounters pollutants. They also have the added benefit of storing water for use later for things like watering your lawn or gardens or washing your car.
All you need is a roof, some gutters and downspouts or a roof valley, and a rain barrel. They are easy to install and don't require much maintenance. You can build your own rain barrel or purchase one from a local hardware store or environmental fundraiser.
