Do a soil test
Fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn, but don't waste your money by using too much fertilizer. Take the time to test your soil so you know exactly how much is needed. (A soil test will also tell you if you need to adjust your soil's pH or add compost.) Request a free soil testing kit by calling us at 766-1066; analysis through the Maine Soil Testing Service is only $15.
Aerating your lawn loosens the soil so water, air, and nutrients can get down to the roots of the grass. Aerating is important for areas where soil gets compacted (areas where people most commonly walk) and if you have a lot of clay in your soil. Rent a core aerator from a local hardware store - it's affordable, and the job can be done quickly.
Ideally, grass needs 6-inches of soil to grow. Unfortunately, Maine soils tend to be very shallow (only about 3-inches in most places). Adding a thin layer (1/4 to 3/8 inch) of compost over your lawn will help you build up your soil layer faster, while also adding nutrients and organic matter to help you grow a healthy lawn.
Overtime, lawns tend to get thin spots where old grass dies off. Since we always mow our lawns, we never let grass renew itself by going to seed. Give your lawn a boost by spreading some new seed directly over your existing lawn. Growing a thicker lawn not only looks better, it also helps out compete weeds. Look for a seed mixture with mostly fescues and ryegrasses, and try to keep the Kentucky bluegrass to a minimum. Some suggested mixes are available in our list of recommended products.
