Deering High School students study Capisic Brook

Students from Deering High School put on their waders, grabbed their nets, and jumped into Capisic Brook. They were searching for macroinvertebrates that live on the bottom of the stream. Based on what they found, they could determine how healthy the water is. In addition to dragonfly larva, sowbugs, and scuds, they also caught a small turtle. The students also conducted tests to measure the amount of oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous in the water.

It was a great day to be outside learning about our local watershed.

This amazing outdoor experience is funded by the City of Portland through the Greener Neighborhoods Cleaner Streams program and taught by the Cumberland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
